Welcome

Welcome to the laboratory of Cerebro-Vascular Accidents and Behavioural Recovery website

The Cerebro-Vascular Accidents and Behavioural Recovery Laboratory (CVABRL) was created in 1998 by Dr. Plamondon. Since its creation, over 60 students have completed their honours thesis, 4 have completed their masters, and 9 have completed their Ph.D.

Our research initially focused on the study of cerebrovascular accidents (CVA). We studied the plastic and neurochemical changes in discrete brain regions following an ischemic stroke. We wished to unlock the mechanisms underlying recovery of cognitive functions following a CVA and the role of peptide systems or neuroprotective agents, which promote plasticity following these lesions in order to maximize functional recovery.

In recent years, our lab has begun studying other key brain systems and their impacts on behaviour. Namely, we have taken an interest in the endocannabinoid system, which is activated by cannabis consumption, and we have been looking at its impact on food motivation and consumption, as well as pro-social behaviours and sociability. Additionally, we started studying the association between stress and the reproductive axis, particularly the impact of stressors on fertility and reproductive success in females.

For these studies, we use animal models, histological, pharmacological and molecular techniques as well as different behavioural tests.

Research Questions

Ongoing projects in our lab aim to answer the following questions:

  1. How do cannabinoid receptors in the central nervous system influence ingestive and hedonistic behaviours? Moreover, does stimulation of the cannabinoid system during adolescence induce long-term changes in the brain?
  2. How do different types of stressors affect the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis in females? Specifically, how do social stressors impact hormonal cycles, reproductive success, and ovarian health?

Answers to these questions will not only reveal important mechanisms underlying a variety of brain pathways, but also provide insight into the behavioural implications of manipulating these brain circuitries.
